were constructed of poles and buffalo hides—the poles being arranged so as to enclose a circle, and meeting at the top,where they were held together by a band of rawhide. The frameworkthus formed was covered with hides sewed together. An opening wasleft at the top for the escape of the smoke, and another in the side servedas a door. The officer led the way inside one of the lodges, and the boys followed.There was not much to be seen there, and the place was so filled withsmoke from a fire that burnt in the centre of the floor that the eyes ofthe visitors were affected to tears. The usual custom among the Indiansis to make a fire on the ground in the middle of the lodge, and let thesmoke get out the best Avay it can. The most of it goes through theopening already described, and the balance mixes with the enclosed air,and is anything but agreeable to a stranger unaccustomed to live in a •/ o o o smoky atmosphere. Some of theanimals were in fine condition, while others were thin in flesh, and seemedto have just arrived from a long march. They would be likelyto remain for a week or two where they were, to give the animals achance to recuperate. Indian ponies have a hard life to lead. They are badly fed and badlytreated, and it is proverbial that the red men are the worst masters in theworld in their treatment of horse-flesh. When on the march or in the PECULIARITIES OF INDIAN LIFE. hunt, they frequently ride their animals to death, and if a pony gives outhis owner deserts him without the slightest compunction.
