Sheddon Sanguinetti,who most kindly gave us a special permit to collectbirds. The time of our visit corresponded withthe close time for wild birds, and a law for theirprotection is very properly enforced. Having been provided with a guide in theshape of a small native boy, one of my companionsand I started off for a long walk into the interior.Before we had gone far from the settlement webecame greatly struck by the abundance of birdlife. In no other island in the West Indies did Isee such numbers of so many different kinds ofbirds as on Grand Cayman. In each patch ofvegetation we came upon fresh species, and wewere very soon busily engaged in observing andcollecting them. (140) CROWNED WARBLERS 147 winter there, and one, at least, of these appearsto have established itself as a resident species.This is the crowned warbler,* a small bird of adull greyish-brown above, white below, with a crestof yellow feathers. Two other species of this genusare found on the island, and one—Dendroecaauricapilla—which is very common on GrandCayman, but is found nowhere else, is a mosthandsome little bird of a beautiful golden canaryyellow, with the crown of the head tinged withchestnut. We found it close to the settlement,where small flocks were flitting about through thetrees and bushes. Nearly all the West IndianIslands possess species closely allied to the Caymangolden warbler, but the latter surpasses all othersin the purity and brilliance of its colouring.
