After a few minutes rest at this pleasantspot, we are again in the saddle, but our partydivides. Some prefer the trip to Indian GardenPlateau, where by an easy route one may indeedcome to the river bank, but it is a bank somethousands of feet above the stream itself. Butmost of us decide in favor of the far more stren-uous trail which leads through an interminablelabyrinth of granite-walled ravines to the verymargin of the untamable Colorado. Therugged walls shut out the view much of thetime, though through occasional openings thereare still glimpses of the vast blood-red palacesthat now tower far above us sharp against the 122

Our path follows the graveled beds wherethe torrents pour towards the river when heavyrains fall; but the courses are now nearly dry andmarked by mere trickling streams. At timesour path seems to end abruptly against a blackinsurmountable wall—but our guide turns into anarrow defile that leads on still downward—downward. There are places where the pathclings precariously to the side of a cliff, risinghundreds of feet above and dropping as manyhundreds sheer below us. And worst of all isthe Devils Corkscrew—for his satanic majestyhas almost as many possessions in the GrandCanyon as in the Yellowstone; we do nothear so much of him in the elysian vale of theYosemite, thank heaven. But the Corkscrew isrightly named, whether the devil has aught to dowith it or not. Our guide calls to us to dis-mount.
