Over all the central plateau, which fromhere seems level, and over the foothills andlower slopes of the mountains, the forestextends like a black uniform bed of weeds,interrupted only by lakes and meadows andsmall burned spots called parks— all of them,except the Yellowstone Lake, being mere dotsand spangles in general views, made conspicuousby their color and brightness A few columns and puffs of steam are seenrising from the treetops, some near, but most ofthem far off, indicating geysers and hot springs,gentle-looking and noiseless as downy clouds,softly hinting the reaction going on between thesurface and the hot interior.
