n the divine light of the alpenglowtheir earthiness disappears, and blending withthe heavens, they seem neither high nor low. Over all the central plateau, which fromhere seems level, and over the foothills andlower slopes of the mountains, the forestextends like a black uniform bed of weeds,interrupted only by lakes and meadows andsmall burned spots called parks— all of them,except the Yellowstone Lake, being mere dotsand spangles in general views, made conspicuousby their color and brightness A few columns and puffs of steam are seenrising from the treetops, some near, but most ofthem far off, indicating geysers and hot springs,gentle-looking and noiseless as downy clouds,softly hinting the reaction going on between thesurface and the hot interior. From here yousee them better than when you are standingbeside them, frightened and confused, regardingthem as lawless cataclysms. Turning to the eastward, you have thecanyon and reaches of the river in full view; andyonder to the southward lies the great lake, thelargest and most important of all the high foun-tains of the Missouri-Mississippi, and the last tobe discovered Yonder is Amethyst Mountain, and othermountains hardly less rich in old forests, whichnow seem to spring up again in their glory; andyou see the storms that buried them—the ashesand torrents laden with boulders and mud, thecenturies of sunshine, and the dark, lurid nights.You see again the vast floods of lava, red-hot andwhite-hot, pouring out from gigantic geysers,usurping the basins of lakes and streams,absorbing or driving away their hissing, scream-ing waters, flowing around hills and ridges,submerging every subordinate feature.
