ate, where it reaches an average height of 50 to 70feet and an average diameter of 18 to 24 inches, it is found in thewestern part of the Piedmont plateau region and in the moun-tain counties south of the French Broad river. (Fig. 31, p. 120.)It grows on dry, often sandy or gravelly ridges, mixed with theshort-leaf and scrub pines. It produces seed often and in abundance, and the seedlings,which require a good deal of light, are commonin dry open situ-ations, and in old fields. Young trees sprout from the stump tosome extent, but the sprouts are short-lived. The resistance ofthe pitch pine to fire is exceptionally great. The rigid flattened leaves are usually in threes, from shortsheaths, and 3 to 5 inches long. The cones are ovate and from 2to nearly 4 inches long, the scales armed with a short recurvedspine. The wood is light, soft, not strong, brittle, and coarse-grained ;light brown or red in color; the thick sapwood yellow or often N. C. GfeOLOGiCAL SURVEY. BULLETIN 6. PLATE XVt.

POND OR SAVANNAH PINE POND PINE. SAVANNA PINE. 12 nearly white. It is used for fuel, charcoal, and coarse lumber.It has been sparingly cut for lumber in North Carolina. Pinus serotina, Michaux.(pond pine, savanna pine, swamp pine, pocosin pine.) A small tree, with a short cylindrical trunk, numerous shortbranches, and smooth dark brown bark broken into rectangularplates, reaching a height of SO and a diameter of 3 feet. (PlateXYI.) It occurs on low peaty or wet sandy soils of the worst quality,from North Carolina to Florida, near the coast. In this State, where it reaches an average lieight of 40 to 50feet, it is common in the small swamps of the coastal plain, and MAP OFNORTH CAROLINA SCALE OF MILES
