Summary edit

Description
English: Soldiers at a well. In the middle of a ruined cottage and a yard of rubble the existing caption says there is a well. You cannot see the well for the number of soldiers crowding around. Most soldiers are holding water cans.

The nickname 'Tommy' entered into general usage after the Rudyard Kipling poems, 'Tommy' and 'To Thomas Atkins' (1892), which pay homage to the sturdy character of the average British soldier. New and secure communication and supply lines were vital to an advancing army's success.
[Original reads: 'OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH TAKEN ON THE BRITISH WESTERN FRONT. Tommies at a well.']
