in two. Most of the pages wereflexible but were dirty, discolored, and slightly acidic.Many were foxed. Two folded plates in the back ofvolume two were hand colored; some colors were verysoluble in water. The reds had transferred to facingpages. Some colors were smeared. The exterior pageswere marked with graphite pencil and stamp inks. Someinks might feather or fade slightly in water. TREATMENT PROVIDED: The pH was recorded before and after treatment: before5.0, after 7.0. The volumes were collated and disbound.The inks were tested for solubility. The head, ta.il, andpages were dry cleaned where necessary; the pages werewashed and then buffered (deacidified) with magnésiumbicarbonate solution. Tears were mended and foldsguarded where necessary with Japanese kozo paper andwheat starch paste. The volumes were sewn on linentapes with linen thread and case bound in full cloth.Each volume was titled using a gold stamped leatherlabel. Northeast Document Conservation Center June2001 DW/MPB
