ns, such as they are, arein a remarkable state of preservation, the skull althoughfragile, and the bones generally showing little evidence ofdecay; the teeth being such as might well give rise to a feelingof envy in the present generation. Their antiquity, however,cannot well be open to doubt when it is remembered that,partly associated with them in the same trench, and generallyunder like conditions in the same quarry, there have beenfound the many relics of Romano-British age to which attentionhas been called. In burials of this early period various articles are commonlypresent, but although search was made nothing of the kindwas found Dr Beddoe having kindly examined the skull as well asthe principal bones, and contributed notes thereon, which followthis paper, it is unnecessary to say more about them herethan to express our great obligation to him for his valuableassistance so readily given when suffering from indisposition.It may be remarked, however, that the views of Dr. Beddoe

Relics Lately Found at Radstock. 243 as to the colossal size of the skull and its probable Romanorigin are quite in accordance with the surroundings amongstwhich the remains were found. Before concluding these notes, it should be added that thedeposits in which all these remains have been found wouldappear to deserve further and more systematic investigationthan they have hitherto had. The fact that they are no longerconfined to occasional refuse pits, but are found in what mayhave been ancient lines of entrenchment, tends to show thatthe earthworks which still exist on two sides of the groundmay once have extended all round it, thus completing whatnow appears to be a very defective fortification. And justas General Pitt Rivers found similar trenches rich in ancientremains, so it might prove in the present case. It may beoutside the scope of the Bristol and Gloucester Society, butit may be commended to the Bath Branch of the SomersetArchaeological and Natural
