iles, R.S.A., who was an excellentobserver and greatly interested in natural history,had prepared an account of the occurrence of thespecies on Deeside. This was based mainly onoral information supplied by Sir Robert Gordon, ofOld Balmoral, an intimate friend who took a keeninterest in all matters relating to sport, and by hisgamekeepers. Mr. Giles notes w^ere made at therequest of Dr. Macgillivray, for publication in theNatural History of Deeside ; but they did not ajipearin that work, not having been incorporated in themanuscript before the death of the author. Fromthe back of a study of black-game in Avater-colours,painted at Balmoral in 1830, I copied the followingwhich is in the handwriting of the artist: TwoCoileach-coUie, Capercailzie, were shot in Ballochbuie,on the occasion of a marriage rejoicing, in 1785, andwhich Sir Robert is confident were the last of thenative birds heard of in Scotland.
