Thememory of his fathers piety was still fresh in his mind, andat Cuxa, over the brow of the hill which shelters Corneillafrom easterly winds, there had already stood for close upon200 years the great abbey of St. Michael, in which hisfather had died, and of which his brother was now thespiritual head. These influences were not lost upon him,and Count Wilfred resolved to emulate his ancestors by thefoundation of another abbey in his own lovely valley ofVernet. There is nothing to prove that in this purposeCount Wilfred was inspired by other than pious motives, byhis devotion to the Church, and by his gratitude to Heavenfor safe deliverance from the crisis of the Millennium,when all men believed the world would be destroyed;yet there lingers to this day amongst the people of thesehills the belief that the Abbey of St. Martin owes its originto a great act of expiation
