As the young kingwas to spend the day at the palace, he now dismissedme, appointing one of his chamberlains to escort mehome. A little after sunset the people collected in crowds towitness the play which was to be performed on the kingsreturn, expected at seven oclock. The multitude was sodense that not a single inch of ground in the courtyardwas unoccupied, and the walls, even, were all covered.At these festivities the people are apparently permitted VOL. I. p 210 THE PLAT. Chap. VII. to depart from the customary posture of humility, forevery one was seated in Oriental fashion. The play wassimply a phantasmagoria tolerably well managed, andaccompanied by music more noisy than harmonious; butwhich appeared perfectly to satisfy the public.
