Glanders, swine pest, and swine plague have been broughtto the American continent, and have been even more destructive here than intheir ancient habitat. The diseases which at present are regarded as most serious attracted butlittle attention at the beginning of the century, or were unknown. Tuber-culosis has now become the great scourge of dairy cows and other highlybred cattle, ruining many of the best herds and threatening the health of theconsumers of milk, if not also of beef. Texas fever, a disease of cattle firststudied in the United States, but now known to be widely disseminated overthe South American, African, and Australian continents, has during lateyears retarded operations for improving and increasing the stock of cattle,and has seriously restricted the marketing of animals from the infected dis-tricts.

As the twentieth century approaches, however, the influence of theanimal plagues is on the wane, and with a few more years of active scientificinvestigations they will all be so thoroughly controlled that the disastrousvisitations of the past can never be repeated, and they will not even be ahindrance or menace to the stock grower.
