Climb the Broadway Approach andview the city, inspect the Polytechnic Institute, ascend Mt. Ida. The Glens Falls car passes by the great collar-and-cuff fac-tories, and along the river bank to Waterford, traditionally thehighest point reached in 1610 by Hendrick Hudson in the HalfMoon. Here we begin the actual journey into the valleysstoried past, toward the romance and beauty of the Lakes. Be-yond the town we run with canal to left and on the right theHudson, flowing between rocky banks crowned with pine. Here, too, we come into thedark and bloody ground of the Indian wars. Where the damruffles the Stillwater into rapids and riffles, took place, onSept. 19, 77, the first skirmish in that great retreat of Burgoynethat climaxed at Victory Mills Now, as we pass Bemis Heights, look up and see to the westthe hills over which the battle ebbed and flowed all thatlong day of Oct. 7, 1777, till the English were forced to theirtents. With a last wild charge the Americans under Arnoldstormed the camp, and the next night Burgoyne fled towardSaratoga. This was the turning-point of the Revolution. After leaving The Cove, we see to the left a tablet:Here Gen. Burgoyne surrendered his sword to Gen. Gates,Oct, 17, 1777.
