Title |
Two views of a Medieval vessel. |
||
Description |
English: The object is a rim of a vessel, made from cast copper alloy. The rim is a narrow ‘n’ shape in profile, which is decorated on the interior with a fine double groove just below the rim. Further decoration occurs on both faces c. 10mm in from the rim, and that decoration is in the form of a ridge bordered by fine grooves on the interior face. The exterior face is decorated in the same way. Between the rim and this decoration, on the interior surface, there are fine regular concentric striations which were possibly made in the production of the vessel. The edges of the object, with the exception of the rim are all heavily abraded, and may be recent breaks. The surface of the vessel has a well developed shiny mid green patina. The rim measures 33.84mm long and is 2.3mm thick. It weighs 7.7g. Ottaway and Rogers (2002 Craft, Industry and Everyday Life: Finds From Medieval York CBA) illustrate a similar rim in profile, No. 12860. The vessel probably dates to the Medieval period. |
