Description
English: U.S. Navy Chief Engineman Cordon Phillips, standing, facilitates a presentation about the Battle of Midway aboard the guided missile destroyer USS Curtis Wilbur (DDG 54) during Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) 2013 in the Gulf of Thailand June 7, 2013. CARAT is a series of bilateral exercises held annually in Southeast Asia to strengthen relationships and enhance force readiness. The Battle of Midway, fought June 4-7, 1942, is considered the turning point in the Allied war against Japan in the Pacific theater during World War II. The Japanese plan to occupy the Midway Atoll was thwarted by U.S. forces. Japan lost four aircraft carriers during the battle; the USS Yorktown (CV 5) was also sunk.
