Description
English: FORWARD OPERATING BASE DELHI, Helmand province, Islamic Republic of Afghanistan — U.K. Ambassador to Afghanistan Sir William Patey reads the plaque on the Garmsir District British Armed Forces Memorial during his visit here, June 11. During his visit, Patey was briefed on political, educational and infrastructural developments in Garmsir since 2006, when British Forces had authority of the area. British forces were the first coalition forces to operate in Garmsir in 2006 and transitioned authority of the area to the Marine Corps in 2008. The battalion staff also addressed the recent progress of coalition forces in the area, highlighting the upcoming district governor’s elections and ongoing programs and projects here.

Patey was appointed as the Ambassador to Afghanistan in early May of 2010. His previous placements include Ambassador to Riyadh, Ambassador to Iraq and Ambassador to Sudan. This was his first visit here.

The battalion supports Regimental Combat Team 1, under 2nd Marine Division (Forward), which serves as the ground combat element in Helmand. The mission of the division is to partner with Afghan National Security Forces to conduct counterinsurgency operations to secure the Afghan people, defeat insurgent forces, and enable ANSF to assume security responsibilities in the region. Ultimately, the partnered forces promote the expansion of stability, development and legitimate governance.
