From Boone a very gentle descent of about3 feet to the mile continues to Ogden, but from Ogden the strata riseat the rate of 8; feet to the mile as far as Jefferson. Along the mainline of the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railway the St. Peter dipswest from Grinnell to a point 12 miles north of Des Moines at therate of 6 feet to the mile. (See PL XV.) West of Des Moines thestrata probably continue their westward dip through or nearlythrough Dallas County, beyond which a very gentle ascent probablyoccurs. From Waterloo to Des Moines the St. Peter descends 1,143feet, or a little less than 12^ feet to the mile. The deep-water beds of this district are the St. Peter sandstone,the Prairie du Chien group, and the Jordan sandstone. The Jordan,however, may not be found well defined in the southern and south-western parts.
