his can be strikingly illustrated by tabu-lating the total solids of the deep waters along north-south andeast-west lines across the State. In the first tabulation figures forwaters along east-west lines are given with the locations and depthsof the wells, the sharp transition in amount of dissolved mineralmatter on each line being indicated by heavy rules. Column A rep-resents the waters of wells beginning at McGregor, Clayton County,and going west to Missouri River along a line passing through thesecond tier of counties from the north. Column B contains wellsfor the most part in the fourth tier of counties from the north, alonga line beginning at Dubuque and ending at Sioux City. Column Cincludes wells mostly in the sixth tier of counties beginning at Chn-ton and ending at Logan in Harrison County. The figure for Grin-nell represents the best deep water found there, that of city wellNo. 4; the water from most of the Grinnell wells contains about 1,200 WATER-SUPPLY PAPER 293 PLATE IV
