s noisy, excitable, but a verygood-humored one, running and pushing about, andlaughing, talking, and shrieking. The beauty of thewomen is very remarkable, and struck us much; suchbeautiful dark eyes and hair, and such fine teeth. Al-most every third woman was pretty; some remarkablyso. They wear no bonnets, and generally long bluecloaks. The men are very poorly, often raggedly, dressed,and many wear blue coats and short breeches with bluestockings. They went afterwards to Kingstown, where the Queensaid she had an excellent salmon for dinner. Albert de-cided on going to Waterford, ten miles up the river, in theFairy with the boys, and as I felt giddy and tired, I pre-ferred remaining quietly on board sketching. She wasdelighted with the view of the Wicklow hills from the Vice-regal Lodge, to which she afterwards went. Next the Queen went to Carton, the Duke of Leinstersfine house, not far from Dublin. THE PRINCE CONSORT IN THE UNIFORM OF A FIELD MARSHAL STIRRING TIMES OF PEACE AND WAR was the Duke of Leinster. He wore the often-folded highwhite necktie, blue coat and brass buttons, and buff waist-coat of the times of her Majestys predecessors. He hada smooth-shaven face save for a little side-whisker, blueeyes, a straight, full nose, and the most charming andbenevolent of expressions. He was courtesy itself, andwas a great lover of his country, loyal to the backbone tohis sovereign, and he was bitterly disappointed when inthe sixties he saw some of his people going across his parkto join a silly and ignorant attempt at insurrection. The Queen admired the Dukes house and garden, wherethere were two bands playing. She describes it as a formalFrench garden, with rows of Irish yews, and says: TheDuke is one of the kindest and best of men.
