Title
VESSEL
Description
English:

A copper-alloy zoomorphic spout from a Late Medieval laver, ewer, etc.

Traces of solder survive on the surfaces of the attachment end, which has a central slot and curves forward into the neck and head of the animal. A spout of circular cross section protrudes from the open mouth of the dog-like head, which is well moulded but of slightly stylised appearance. The ears point upwards, one on either side of the head, projecting slightly above the top of the brow, which has a central ridge but is otherwise flat. The face tapers towards the deeply concave snout, and the eyes are suggested by shallow triangular depressions.

The length is 75mm, the width is 25mm. A hanging-laver with similar spouts is held in the collections of the British Museum (1956,0702.1); it is suggested to date from the 14th to 15th century and to have possibly been made in Flanders.
