The fap (in the foregoingExperiment, numb. 34) rifen this day fincenoon 2 inches, while this funk by theper-fpiration of the ftem 5 which there was lit-tle room for, in the very fhort ftem of theother. Here the force of the rifing fap in the mor-ning is plainly owing to the energy of theroot and ftcm. In another like mercurialgage, (fixed near the bottom of a Vine whichrun 20 feet high) the mercury was raifed bythe force of the fap 38 inches equal to 45feet -) 5 inches.-J- f height of water. Which force is near five timesgreater thanthe force of the blood in the great crural ar-tery of a Horfe ; feven times greater thanthe force of the blood in the like artery ofa Dog $ and eight times greater than thebloods force in the fame artery of a fallowDoe: Which different forces I found bytying thofe feveral animals down alive upontheir backs 5 and then laying open the greatleft crural artery, where it firft enters thethigh , I fixed to it (by means of two brafspipes, which run one into the other) aglafstube of above ten feet long
