In an unfinished state the Tomb remained for no lessthan 240 years, until, that is to say, the middle of theeighteenth century. In 1753, Gaetano Masoni, a sculptorof Settignano, completed the Monument, and set on itthat cachet of vulgarity which at first glance makes it seemincredible that any part of it belongs to the Quattrocento. To him are due the bust of the Cardinal, the Sarcophaguswith the two huge children holding reversed torches, thesurmounting stemma, and the surrounding baroque frame- * See Doc. xii. p. 3, published by Beani, Notizie Storichesu NiccoloForteguerri, p. 124. Tothese must be added, although there is no documentaryevidence in support, the relief with the inscription sup-ported by the Donatellesque putti. But before examiningthe marble itself a few words must be said as to theauthenticity of a clay model in the Victoria and AlbertMuseum, South Kensington, No. 7599, which is claimedby several critics to be Verrocchios own work, and officiallydeclared to be the original model prepared by him in 1474at the commissio
