But in order to bolt more strongly the northwesterngate of Hindustan, Lord Auckland began a war against DostMohammed, amir of Kabul, who was friendly to Russia, took himprisoner, and reinstated upon the throne of Kabul Shujali, therightful shah, whom the former had expelled. But a culpable im-prudence suddenly converted this success into a misfortune of thegreatest severity. Hemmed in by a general rising of the Afghans, cutoff from Hindustan, enfeebled by cold and hmiger, the entire Englisharmy, together with the baggage, the women and children, 12,000 inall, was utterly destroyed in November, 1841. A single man escapedalive. This wretched experience deprived Lord Ellenborough,Aucklands successor, of all desire to conquer Afghanistan ; and aftersending a successful punitive expedition thither he restored DostMohammed. He confined himself subsequently to securing the pos-session of the Punjab by the victories of Sir Charles Napier and PLATE XVIII.
