English: Former Vietnam POW, retired U.S. Army Maj. Bob White, speaks with members of the press after participating in a ceremony marking the 40th anniversary of Operation Homecoming, April 4, 2013, at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii. In 1973, the last Vietnam conflict prisoner of war landed at what was then Hickam Air Force Base. White was flying a visual reconnaissance mission in an OV-1 Mohawk when the aircraft was hit by enemy ground fire forcing him to eject. He was captured Nov. 15, 1969, and remained a POW for three years, four months, and 17 days until his release, April 1, 1973. White was the last POW to be repatriated as part of Operation Homecoming, “I came back three days after the rest of the guys I had the whole plane to myself, when I got to the hospital it was just me," White said. "It was great I was just tickled to death to be out.” (Department of Defense photo by U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Michael R. Holzworth/Released) |
