Description |
English: View from Greenwich Park A view from One-Tree Hill looking towards the City over the Queen's House and Greenwich Hospital, taken from Tombleson's 'Thames' views, first published in 1834. The representation of the service buildings beside the east wing of what was then the Greenwich Hospital School (now NMM) in the foreground is both poor and problematic as to what is shown, the large building at lowest right also being a puzzle. The Queen's House itself, and its relations to its colonnades is also misunderstood. The plate may be partly based on W. H. Bartlett's view, which is similar and while not accurate, apparently more so (PAD2243). As with other Tombleson plates it is the decorative surround, with emblems and instruments of astronomy and navigation, which comprised half the merit of the image. The title is repeated there in both German and French. |
