VILLAS AND COTTAGES. 147 DESIGN No. 5. (V. & W.) SUBURBAN HOUSE. This is a design for a suburban residence for Rev.E. J. OBeilly, of Newburgh. It seeks to supply theaccommodation of an ordinary three-story brick housein a form that shall have a less high-shouldered andstilted appearance than usually distinguishes buildingsof this class. In the plan a recessed lobby is arranged, with outerdoor for shelter, instead of a projecting porch. Theprincipal floor shows two parlors and a small study;or, if another arrangement is preferred, a parlor, a li-brary, and a spare bedroom, the back rooms openingon to a veranda. In the basement is the dining-room,kitchen, coal-cellar, and pantries, with a side entrancecommunicating with the same. This arrangement isto be preferred to the more common plan of puttingthe kitchen door under the area steps, as it gives moreprivacy, and uses up less space in the basement for pas-sage-ways.
