English: From left to right, GySgt. Fernando Gonzalez, Outside Plant and Inside Plant project manager with 8th Communications Battalion, Task Force Belleau Wood; GySgt. Timothy Stovall, battalion telephone switching chief, 8th Communications Bn.; Staff Sgt. Eddie Ordonez, ISP/OSP project manager, 8th Communications Bn.; and Steven Buttery, a field service representative of Rockwell Collins, Inc. The volunteers worked together to build a canopy for the extended care ward of the Camp Leatherneck Wounded Warriors compound. Gonzalez started the project after a nurse told him of some of the struggles Marines were facing due to the structure of the facility.
When wounded service members are recovering from head injuries such as concussions, part of the therapy is to stay in low-light areas because their eyes are very light sensitive. When people opened the door to the building, sunlight flooded the room. Gonzalez enlisted the team to help to build a canopy that would block any sunlight from entering the room. “It was affecting the concussion victims tremendously,” said Gonzalez, a native of San Antonio. “Because it was for the wounded warrior project, I didn’t mind doing something that was completely out of my element, and it was fulfilling for me. It was something that needed to get done.”
