Title
WAW-7CCF71
Description
English: A cast lead or lead alloy ampulla. It has a sub-circular lower part, the upper part, is sub-rectangular. Where the lower and upper portions meet, one edge bears an integral oval lug with a triangular section, its counterpart is missing. In profile the flask is relatively straight.

The lower circular portion of the ampulla has low-relief decoration, one face bearing an eight pettalled flower, the other a more feint motif with what appears to be an outline of a heart with an uncertain design above, all set within a circular border. The face with the heart is slightly concave, whereas the flower face is convex.

The upper portion of the ampulla forms the neck and rim. The rim flares slightly at the edges, but from the top view the rim is as if the rim has been squeezed together. A small portion of the rim is torn and folded downwards, it is not certain whether this is intentional or due to damage.

The surface of the ampulla has developed a light beige coloured patina. The length of the ampulla from the upper edge to the apex of the base is 40.61mm, the maximum width across the lower portion is 28.98mm. The thickness of the base of the ampulla is 9.32mm. It weighs 36.6g.

Ampullae were used as a flask to hold holy water, becoming a souvenir of a pilgrimage; they date to the late 12th to 15th centuries (Spencer, B. 1990, Pilgrim Souvenirs and Secular Badges, Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum p, 57 ff).
