isturbance of the peace. Come, then,Omar, from the shade, where thou hast toolong delayed, and with sundry skillfultwists, wipe out all those parodists. Walt Mason ONE DAY a farmer found a bone; hethought at first it was a stone, andthrew it at a passing snake ere hediscovered his mistake. But when he knewit was a bone, and not a diamond or a stone,he took it to an ancient sage, who said:In prehistoric age, this was the shin-boneof a Thor-dineriomegantosaur-megopium-permastodon-letheriumsohelpmejohn. Thefarmer cried: Dad bing my eyes! Wasever man so wondrous wise? He gazes ona piece of bone, that I supposed to be astone, and, with a confidence sublime, helooks across the void of time, and givesthis fossil bone a name, the fragment ofsome creatures frame! To have suchknowledge, sir, as thine, Id give those fer-tile farms of mine. Dont envy me, thesage replied, and shook his weary head, andsighed, Your life to me seems full andsweet~you always have enough to eat! Knowledgeis Power (129)
Text Appearing After Image:
O, it may be all right for a icoman so old,to leap 0 er the table and chairs. Walt Mason MY GRANDMOTHER suffered andlanguished in pain, till she read ina magazine ad, that a woman shouldput on a sweater and train, and help theDelsartean fad. And now when I go tomy midday repast, no meal is made readyfor me; my grandmothers climbing a forty-foot mast or shinning up into a tree. Thehouse has a stairway that she will not useshe always slides down on the rail; shesspoiled all the floors with her spiked sprint-ing shoes, and she laughs when I put up awail. O, it may be all right for a womanso old, to leap oer the table and chairs, while I try to fill up on the grub that iscold, with the dishes all piled on the stairs.Today I protested with many a tear, madea moan like a maundering dunce; and shekicked all the lights from the brass chan-delier, and turned forty handsprings atonce. I told her I never could prosper andthrive, on victuals unfit for a man; sheoffered to throw me three falls out
