early part of his ecclesiastical careerat Limington, near Ilchester. The interior of the church is of great beauty, andespecially noticeable is the framed roof of the southtransept, which is of black Irish oak. The churchcontains several memorials of the Digby family, and aninteresting epitaph by Pope to the children of LordDigby (1727). Both the nave and choir are very fine,the former being most elaborate in its ornamentation,and having bays and a clerestory of five-light windowsin the Perpendicular style. A notable feature of theclerestory is its extreme height in proportion to that ofthe church itself. The choir possesses three bays, witha lofty clerestory, and the enrichments of the groinedroof are very noticeable. The glass in the clerestorywindows contains figures of the saints and bishops ofSherborne, the reredos depicting in high relief theAscension and the Last Supper, set within a mouldingof Caen stone. / Sherborne Abbey and the carved work of the stalls. The north choiraisle contains two interesting altar-tombs, one bearingthe figure of Abbot Clement (1163), and another ofan unknown ecclesiastic. Of the various chapels, that of the Holy Sepulchreoccupies the east angle of the south transept, whilst thatof St Catherine is in the west angle. The supposedburial-place of King Ethelbert and King Ethelbald isin the procession path behind the high altar. BishopRogers chapel is situated north of the choir aisle, andthe Wickham chapel, containing the fine canopy tombof Sir John Horsey, who died 1546, is situated on theeastern side of the north transept.
