Ordinarily one thinks of an agriculturalpeople as being peaceably inclined, but it Isjust the reverse in this case, for the Englishofficials are constantly on the watch and ex-pect trouble at most any moment. is surprised at the direct line they take, go-ing over hill and dale without any attemptto keep on the level; this makes it very hardtraveling, but a Kikuyu seems to pay no at-tention to grades or valleys when he startsto go anywhere. If a traveler diverges fromthe path and walks on cultivated ground hewill soon be curtly notified to make himselfscarce if the owner of the field is near. The soil, which is of a red volcanic nature,is very suitable for the growth of potatoes,brown beans, maize, millet, yams, sugar-cane,gourds and bananas; certainly all of thesedo not grow in the same locality, the stronger 118 WESTERN FIELD

A LYGOMA-NI/ OR HEAD CHIEF, of them growing on the high grounds whilethe sugar-cane, tobacco and bananas growin the valleys. It is a remarkable fact thatthis is the only tribe in Central Africa thatraises millet; where the seed originally camefrom no one seems able to tell. The climate of Kikuyuland is ideal. Lyingas it does nearly under the equator, a personwould naturally suppose the heat would beoppressive; but the elevation—which is fromfive to seven thousand feet—insures the na-tives a pleasant climate all the year round,the only climatic changes noticeable beingthat certain months of the year have moreor less rain than others, the equinoxial peri-ods apparently having a great influence overthese conditions. Occasionally during theyear frost will appear at the highest points,but it seldom does any damage. Beside thecereal crops raised by the natives, numbersof goats, sheep ana chickens are seen in va-rious places; a few cattle will be noted also,but they either do not thrive
