Has beenactive writer on lyceum subjects, be-ing ed. of Lyceum World. Indian-apolis, since 1907. Permanent address:Indianapolis, Ind. 144 GRISMER. Joseph Rohde—Actor, Dram-atist and Manager. Born Albanv, N. Y., Nov. 4, 1849.After grad. from the Albanv BoysAcad., at the asre of 15. he enlisted inthe 192nd N. Y. Vol. Reg. He wasin active service until the close of theCivil War, when he returned to Al-bany and went into commercial busi-ness. Joining the Histrionic AmateurDram. Club, he acquired a tastefor theatrical life, and made his firstprof, appearance in Albany in 1870.

L.Davenport, Charlotte Cushman, LauraKeene, Edwin Adams, Charles Feohter,Charles Mathews, Lawrence Barrett,John McCullough and Adelaide Neil-son. He went to San Francisco in1877 as leading man of the GrandO. H. Stock co., afterward oc-cupying the same position at the Cali-fornia, and the Baldwin. Dur-ing this time he made dramatizationsof Monte Cristo and Called Back, and,having married Phoebe Davies in1883, he made up a rep. withthese and other plays, organized aco. and appeared as a star, joint-ly with his wife, until 1898. Meantime,in collaboration, with Clay M. Greene,wrote The New South, which ran threeyears. In 1898 he rewrote and prod.Way Down East, of which Wil-liam A. Brady and he are joint own-ers, and which has had a phenomenalrun, lasting over fourteen seasons.Since then he has
