xe that I have oftenthought this Phoenix of our woodlands raised itsbrilliant danger signals as a silent protest and warningagainst the reckless devastation of our depleted forests.The upright, rather stout, simple or branched stalkgrows from two to eight feet in height. The veryshort-stemmed, alternating, thin-textured leaves arelance-shaped — long and narrow, resembling willowleaves — and are usually toothless. They are palebeneath, and their lateral veinings curve into eachother near the edge. The perfect rosettes of tuftedbasal leaves are extremely ornamental in their geo-metric formation. The flower has four rounded, widelyspreading, pink petals that are broadest above themiddle. The four long, narrow, pointed, brownishsepals alternate with the petals between which theyexpose their entire length. It has one four-tippedpistil and eight spreading stamens. The flower is setatop a slender, silky, crimson or purple stained pod.The buds succeed each other closely and graduate in 64
