Major Heher Percy thusdescribes a bison-tirive in Bielowitza : We waited in perfect silence forabout half an hour, and then I heard the breaking ot sticks and crashing ofbranches as the herd approached at a gallop. There were about fifteenof them, all thoroughly alarmed, and presenting exactly the appearanceof a herd of American bison, the same carriage of the heat! and the tailcarried in the same manner. Though 1 had but one short view of them,one bull immediately caught my eve as being much larger than the others.... At that moment they disappeared in the lirushwood, but I could hearthem coming straight on towards me, so cocking my rifie, I waited forthem to cross the glade to my left. Louder came the noise or the crashingof branches ; and out burst the leading animal across the clearing abouteighty yards from me, closely followed by the second and remaimler of theherd. American Bison 79 Like their American cousins European bison dearly love a mud-bath,and at times when the flies are troublesome they may frequently be seenplastered over with a coat of dry mud, which forms an efficient protectionagainst their tormentors. During the time they are changing from thewinter to the summer coat, the old pelage hangs loosely to parts of thebody, and comes away in large blanket-like masses. The cows give birthto their offspring in the thickest and most secluded portions of the forestduring the month of May or early part of June, and display great boldnessin defending them from the attacks of prowling wolves or bears. It isseldom that more than a single calf is produced at a birth, and, as alreadystated, in Bielowitza the cows now breed but once in three years, although itis by no means certain that the rate of increase may not formerly have beenless slow.
