WILSON'S SUPERIOR FIELD SEEDS 39
Text Appearing After Image:
Wilson's Prolific Side Oats grow to a medium height, four to four and one-half feet, with a remarkably strong, stiff straw, which enables it to stand up under almost any circumstance. The heads, as can be seen by the accompanying illustration, are un- usually long and heavily loaded with fine, plump grains, weigh- ing thirty-seven to forty pounds per bushel. The grain is noted for. its remarkably thin husk and fat kernel, which makes it one of the most valuable varieties for feeding pur- poses. At the World's Fair, in 1893, we exhibited heads of Wilson's Prolific Side Oats that measured twenty-two inches in length, and contained from four hundred and sixty to five hundred plump grains. For those wanting a good, hardy and productive side oats, we would recommend Wilson's Prolific before any other. By mail, post-paid, large pkt, 10c; 3 pkts., 25c; lb., 30c; 4 lbs., $1.00. By freight, not prepaid, peck, 50c; % bush., 80c; bush $1.40 ; 2 bush., $2.50; 4 bush, or more, $1.10 per bush., including best new sacks. NEW AUSTRALIAN SQUARE=HEADED OATS This remarkable and wonderfully productive variety of oats, which we offered for the first time last year, has won universal praise wherever it has been tried. In order to introduce it as widely as possible, we offered, last spring, premiums amounting to $50.00 for the longest head raised from our Australian Square-Headed Oats. At this writing, Octo- ber 15th, the longest head received measures thirty-two inches. This immense head was grown by Samuel S. Anderson, fioxburg, Idaho, and so far is the longest head of oats that has ever been grown, to our knowledge. The Australian Square- Headed Oats originally came from Australia, and the first ever seen in this country was on exhibition at the World's Fair, Chicago, 1893, in the New South Wales exhibit. Stalks were here shown measuring seven feet in height, and single heads of oats over two feet long. These monster stalks were undoubtedly grown for exhibition pur- poses, but they could not have been grown from the seed of any other variety of oats. The heads, straw and manner of growth of-this wonderful oats differ from all other kinds. On ordinary soil it will grow from four to five feet high and yield from seventy-five to eighty bushels to the acre. The highest yield claimed for it in Australia was one hundred and sixty bushels to the acre. It is a splendid oats both for feeding and market purposes. Stiff straw, ripens medium earlv, and from our reports, has proved an immense cropper in al' soils and climates. Mail, large pkt., 10c; 3 pkts., 25c; lb., 40c, 3 lbs., $1.00. Bv freight, 'not prepaid, 4 qts., 40c; peck, 60c; % bush., $1.00; bush., $1.75 ; 2 bush, or more, $1.60 per bush. MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY OATS This is another immensely productive kind of oats, introduced by us in a limited way last year. It has made such astonishing results, and given such universal satisfaction wherever tried last season, that we now offer it to our customers as the best round-headed variety of oats that we have ever had any experience with in our past thirty years farming and seed- growing. The Michigan University Oats originated near Ann Arbor, Mich. Where the original seed came from we have never been able to ascertain, but it must undoubtedly come from some foreign country, as we have never seen any like it before in the United States. The grains are good size, plump, solid and heavy ; the outer husk is thin and so clear and compact that they have the appearance of clipped oats. The straw is so unusually bright, stiff and strong that it will withstand the most severe wind-storm without being blown down.' This enables it to bear up the immense weight of the heads, which some- times are fifteen to twenty inches in length, heavily loaded with fine, plump, solid grains, weighing from thirty-eight to forty pounds the struck bushel. The Michigan Univer- sity Oats will grow from four to five feet in height on good soil. It is one of the earliest to ripen, and has yielded, the past season, from sixty to eighty bushels to the acre with good, ordinary cultivation. Mr. John Hepburn, Marion County, Ohio, raised ninety-three bushels from one bushel of seed. William Gruber, Indiana, raised thirteen and one- third bushels from four pound of seed. We could name hundreds of others who had equally as good results, but we will only add that anyone sowing the Michigan University Oats (giving it only half a chance) and is not satisfied with the crop, we will agree to return amount of money paid for the seed. By mail, post-paid, large pkt., 10c; 3 pkts., 25c; lb., 25c; 4 lbs., 80c By express or freight, not prepaid, peck, 40c; % hush., 75c; bush., $1.25 2 bush., $2.25 ; 4 bush, or more, $1.10 per bush., including bags. WHITE BONANZA OATS. By mail, post-paid, pkt., 10c; 3 pkts., 25c; lb., 25.; 4 lbs., 80c. By freight, peck, 40c; bush., 90c' IMPROVED BLACK TARTARIAN OATS. This is decidedly the best black oats in cultivation. Grows to a good height; stiff straw, and has yielded'one hundred bushels to the acre on good ground. â It is absolutely rust-proof in all soils and climates. By mail, post-paid, large pkt., 10c; 3 pkts., 25c; lb., 30c; 4 lbs., $1.00. By express or freight, not prepaid, peck, 50c; bush., $1.30 ; 2% bush, (one sack). $3.00, including bags.
