Ruddle. John Clare, S. J. (vol. hi, p. 235). —He probably belongedto a South Wilts family of this name—one of whom—RobertClare alias Dominick—was, about the year 163S, tenant ofChicklade Farm, near Hindon—rented at that time of theBennett family. In 1698, William Clare, of Heytesbury, gent, purchasedlands at Upton Lovel, and from him, I believe, descendedWilliam Clare, of Devizes, surgeon, and for 50 years one ofthe Coroners for this County. He died in 1829, aged S2. Seemonumental tablet in St. James Church, Devizes. His lateresidence, No. 23, Market Place, still retains the figure otiEsculapius in a recess over the doorway. WlLTOMENSIS.
