oldcountry saw-mill has not occurred to them.Their tools appear to be roughly made and ofprimitive design, though evidently of thebest-tempered steel. The only substitute forthe carpenters bench is a plank on the floor,or on two horses; a square, firm, upright postis the nearest approach to a bench and vise,for to this beam a block of wood to be sawedinto pieces is firmly held (Fig. 3). A bigwooden wedge is bound firmly tothe post with a stout rope, and thisdriven down with vigorous blowstill it pinches the block which isto be cut into the desired propor-tions. In using many of the tools,the Japanese car-penter handles themquite differentlyfrom our workman;for instance, hedraws the planetowards him insteadof pushing it fromhim. The planesare very rude-looking implements. Their bodies, instead of beingthick blocks of wood, are quite wide and thin (Fig. 4, D, E),and the blades are inclined at a greater angle than the blade inour plane.
