Description |
English: Working over the Flats in Troubled Water (caricature) An open boat heads towards a rock on the horizon inscribed 'Cape Clear', above it cherub's blow, these three winds (unrecognizable), are inscribed 'Mother Carey's Chickens', they blow against Moira (Francis Rawdon-Hastings, 1st Marquess of Hastings) in the bow. Sheridan is dressed as a harlequin rowing. Yarmouth (Francis Seymour-Conway, 3rd Marquess of Hertford) is pumping hard. Then sitting are the Regent (Prince of Wales). McMahon, and Lady Hertford (Isabella Anne Seymour-Conway, Marchioness of Hertford - Yarmouth's wife and the Regent's mistress) her scarf streaming from her décolletée dress, inscribed 'Manchester Stuff, she steers the boat with an oar. Next to her the Prince vomits, his hat, trimmed with his (prince of Wales crest feathers and motto, 'Ich Dien' is being blown away, puffed by blasts from three winged (portrait) heads, two perhaps intended for Burdett and Whitbread, his head held by McMahon. In the background, centre, Yarmouth Peer (play on pier), leaves no doubt that below it is Yarmouth pumping away, Cuckold's Point is far right. Lady Hertford says: Pull away Sherry— I'll steer you—into—Blanket Bay'. Next her sits the Prince, vomiting, his head held by McMahon, who says, "This is Sorry—Work indeed." Sheridan says to Yarmouth: "Pump a way My Noble dont Flinch." Moira bestrides the bow of the boat clasps the staff from which flies a Union Jack; he says: "I'll keep a good look-out a head for My Honours sake." On the horizon, surrounded with breakers, are buildings: (left) 'Yarmouth Peer', and (right) above Lady Hertford, 'Cuckolds-point', surmounted by a head with wide-spreading horns. |
