Title |
Wrist clasp |
||
Description |
English: A complete hook-piece from a cast copper-alloy early Anglo-Saxon wrist-clasp, of Hines’s Form B19 (Hines 1993, 62-64). It is rectangular in shape with a bar and plate cast in one piece. The bar part has a wide bevelled edge, interrupted by three evenly spaced raised squares, one in the centre and one at either end. A worn hook projects from the centre of the front edge, on the reverse. The plate part, along the rear edge, is much flatter than the bar, and has a circular sewing perforation drilled through either end. The outer edge of the plate is decorated with a longitudinal row of triangular punchmarks. The hook-piece measures 31.5mm in length and 11.2mm in width. Late fifth or sixth century. Form B19 is not a common form of wrist-clasp, and is believed to have been modelled on the more frequent B13a, which has a separate decorative bar added to the plate. Examples of Form B19 from Coddenham and West Stow of have stamped decoration. |
