Returning hastily, he began tawork his way round the bank, wondering which way he ought to go. All at once, however, it struck him that his friend the Vet. was very slow infollowing, and he stood still to listen. Not a sound was audible. He shouted again and again, but received no reply. He began to feel uneasy. He turned his back on the pond and walked straightahead for twenty yards, till he came to a ditch. He kept by the side of it forabout twenty yards farther, then turned and walked straight ahead again, andthis time straight into another ditch. Still it was pitch dark.
