p Albatross to Lower California. One of the important results of the expedi-tion from the viewpoint of the Zoological So-ciety was the capture of six young elephantseals for the New York Aquarium. The mem-bers of the Society will doubtless be interestedin hearing not only how these animals were ob- tained at Guadalupe Island, but in an accountof what was accomplished elsewhere during thecruise. As the elephant seal was supposed tobe extinct, its re-discovery is a matter of greatzoological interest. In addition to the younganimals brought back alive, four specimens ofthe large adult seals (three males and a female)were prepared for the American Museum ofNatural History. The males—carefully measured before skin-ning—were each nearly sixteen feet long. Morethan fifty photographs were taken of the ani-mals as they were found on the island. Thosepublished herewith will serve to show the greatsize, the remarkable proboscis, and how the ele-phant seals look in their natural surroundings.
