en the large Bird House was built, special cages were made for the macaws andparrots in Parrots Hall. The netting en-closing these cages was sufficiently strong toimprison securely a large monkey or evensome of the smaller cats. By steady application, the macaws cut outsections of this netting two and three feetlong and from eight to twelve inches wide, affording an easy passage from one compart-ment to the next. To cut this netting, aworkman is obliged to use heavy, steel cut-ting pliers and considerable force. The net-ting was replaced with heavier material andthus far has resisted successfully all attacksupon it. The peacock has his day in proper season, for then he is the observed of all observers, but alas how are the mighty fallen whenthis gay Lothario imagines that he can dazzlea wandering flock of guinea-fowl, after theinexorable law of nature has shorn him ofhis glory. A number of guinea-fowl, as indifferent toall worldly affairs and as busy as only guinea-fowl can be, were darting about the rectangleof lawn fronting the Elephant House a fewmornings ago, intent only upon filling theircrops. To the guinea-fowl there can be as-cribed no other aim, for to them the axiomall is not gold that glitters is even ephem-eral. In among them strode a peacock, a swagger-ing Jingle of tattered elegance and jauntyimpudence. Bigoted ancestral
