  Comment Isn't it a bit noisy? Basar 03:46, 3 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Comment I dont think the noise is that bad. Motion blur would be worse. Flying birds is not easy and the exposure time needs to be short. I think QI standards should be possible to achieve, not just that once in a lifetime shot. --Korall 19:01, 4 January 2010 (UTC)

Mosque of Paris

edit

Bonjour. Many thanks for your review of my photograph of the close-up of the great mosque of Paris. Could you please explain to me (in basic english, please, i'm French !! lol) what do you mean exactly with the need of "perspective correction". Do you think that it would be better if more "flat" ? (sorry for my bad english...) --Jebulon (talk) 09:50, 9 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Bonjour, no need to be sorry, your English is fine (et beaucoup mieux que mon mauvais français!) Yes, I think a "flat" photo would be better, where the sides of the window and the surrounding decorations are parallel. If you use Windows, you might find the free software ShiftN useful. Even if you don't, the first section of its instructions in French can probably explain what I meant better than I can. There is also the English wikipedia article on Perspective control.
This recent review also recommended perspective correction. The file history shows that picture before and after the correction.
Hope this helps, Avenue (talk) 10:56, 9 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thanks a lot, again. I'll try to do. If not, I'll take another photograph of this close-up, cause I like this little window very much. And congratulations for your QI, very nice ! --Jebulon (talk) 14:54, 9 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Psalm 23 QI

edit

Thanks for the review! Since I suspect long conversations there are just going to break the page, I'll reply here:

Basically, "I own the book" was me trying to keep my statement short, since I was already quoting a bit of the rules, and so on: I meant more that I was the one who did the scanning, preparation, adjustments against the original, and all the rest of the work. If I got the scan from elsewhere, it'd be a much more ambiguous case under QI's rules, as the rules only specifically allow photographic reproductions by Wikimedians: It doesn't discuss edits of scans gotten from elsewhere, and, well... you probably got my point ages ago. Adam Cuerden (talk) 08:49, 30 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

You're welcome. Yes, I wondered if that was the point you were trying to make. Perhaps my response was also too brief to be clear. I think that statements about who did the scan and so forth would probably clutter up the QI page too much, and I think it would generally be better if they were kept on the image description page (except for nominations of other Wikimedian's scans), as with photos. But I can see why you wanted to cover all the bases, given that this was something of a test case. --Avenue (talk) 08:25, 31 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Aye. In future, I think I'll just put "self-scanned". That should be enough, and I can always point to the rules if needed. =) Adam Cuerden (talk) 17:18, 31 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

I thought about that too. I believe the best way to proceed about that is to ask the user, who wrote this feature for Commons, to do the same on English wiki, but I am not sure, who did it. I posted question to Village pump here. Best. --Mbz1 (talk) 01:56, 30 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

I see it's going to be media of the day on 2010-11-16, but File:NASA ISS June 12 2009 Sarychev Volcano.ogv was already media of the day on 2010-09-22. Does it really make sense to use essentially the same video twice in such a short time frame?
Also, I'd like to upload File:NASA ISS June 12 2009 Sarychev Volcano.ogv (higher bitrate) over this image (featured, and geocoded), and tag the former as a duplicate; any objections? –Tryphon 21:05, 11 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I just noticed that myself. I agree it makes no sense to show it twice as MOTD. Please do upload your version over the top of the one I uploaded. I'm sorry I didn't notice your version earlier (I only looked in Category:Sarychev Peak), or I would have nominated that for FP instead. --Avenue (talk) 21:13, 11 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
No problem, it's basically the same file anyway. I just want to make sure we keep the best parts of each version, and that we don't keep near duplicates for no good reason. I'll do the re-uploading and duplicate-tagging, but I'm not really familiar with the MOTD process; would you mind taking care of that (otherwise I'll ask Shizhao, I just noticed he was the one who added it to MOTD)? –Tryphon 21:50, 11 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
I'm not entirely familiar with MOTD either, but I've tried to remove it from the queue. I've left a note on Shizhao's talk page to let him know. --Avenue (talk) 22:32, 11 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I like what you've done with the distant mountains - much improved. The foreground now seems a bit too dark and brown, but even so, I think it is better overall. I've reverted to your version. Would you please update the description of the changes in the RetouchedPicture template? I will try to improve the picture further tonight. Thanks for your help! I've uploaded another version that I think improves the foreground, but I'm still not entirely happy with it. I'll try something else in the next couple of days, once I've learnt my way around a bit more of what the GIMP can do. --Avenue (talk) 00:38, 15 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi

Hi Avenue, I wonder, if you see halos in this image? Thanks.--Mbz1 (talk) 01:48, 20 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi Mila, the outlines of the birds here are definitely much cleaner than in this version. The only thing I see here that is remotely like the haloes there is a brownish fringe under the reflection of the bottom-most bird (a little left of centre). But (1) it is only visible below and in front of the bird's reflection, not all around it, and (b) I see hints of a similar but weaker effect for a couple of the other birds. So this doesn't seem unnatural to me. More generally, I like the more focussed crop you have applied top and bottom, but the left crop feels uncomfortably tight to me. By the way, I was sad to see you withdraw the other plover photo from FPC. It is really a nice photo apart from that flaw. --Avenue (talk) 07:41, 20 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thank you, Avenue. A brownish fringe is a shadow that is visible or not visible depending on the colors of the background. I will renominate plovers image, maybe the latest one we're talking about. Best wishes.--Mbz1 (talk) 16:55, 20 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

The fringing and unsharpness of the four sons of Horus

edit

Hi Avenue.
Thanks for review.
You are absolutely right.
Yes I've got the RAW file, but I don' know how to use it for improvements with GIMP.
Thoughts about ?
Have a nice day, down under !--Jebulon (talk) 00:31, 22 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Bonjour Jebulon,
I think the problem is due to tranverse chromtic aberration (CA). I gather CA can be corrected in GIMP using the Fix-CA plugin, but I haven't tried it. I have used the Panotools software that comes with Hugin. Here is a tutorial for correcting CA using Panotools (in English, sorry). Some DCRaw front-ends (like RawTherapee) seem to provide an easy way to reduce the problem, too. I would be happy to try to fix it if you like; just send me the RAW file (or a link to it). Perfect correction often seems to elude me, but some improvement is usually possible. --Avenue (talk) 04:24, 22 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
P.S. I hope your photo can be fixed. I was sorry to decline it at QIC; I think it is a very interesting image, with excellent quality apart from this problem. --Avenue (talk) 09:00, 22 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
Salut Avenue,
Thanks for your kind message, and for your kind proposal and suggestions. I'll try to do it myself, with the tools you provided. If I have no significant result, I'll send you the RAW file. As you have maybe seen, this picture (of a part of a very small object) was taken through (against) a glass in "the Louvre" Museum, without tripod. No worries with your decline vote: this image does not deserve the QI status. I'm afraid it is really too unsharp too, and cannot be corrected... Well, what is interesting in the picture is... the caption and annotations ! If possible, I try to offer good and usefull captions in french and in english, and good categorization too, because I don't forget that why are not only sharing nice photos, but building a wonderful encyclopedia. A bientôt et encore merci --Jebulon (talk) 15:40, 22 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
You're welcome. I think the image is sharp enough in the centre. CA typically causes softness as well as fringing, so correcting this will hopefully improve the sharpness at the sides too, perhaps even enough to be QI.
The caption and annotations are good, and I think very useful to readers. Perhaps I should be putting more work into my captions too. Amicalement, --Avenue (talk) 00:10, 23 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Dear Avenue,

I just wanted to say thanks for some recent thorough reviews of my images, especially the open pit mine pano. I agree with your observations and I appreciate them. I recently acquited PTgui and the pano was my first attempt using it. It is quite evident that I am not yet mastering that tool  . --Slaunger (talk) 21:29, 7 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

You're welcome, Kim. I'm glad if my thoughts and clumsy annotations were some use to you. I very much appreciate you taking the time to say thanks. And I am still quite a way from mastering the panorama software I use (Hugin) myself!   --Avenue (talk) 00:02, 8 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I've used Hugin for some three years as well, but I was beginning to miss some possibilites like stitching from raws and HDR stitching, and just generally a better user interface. PTgui has much of the same workflow as in Hugin. It just has some more features and the product is more "Automated", yet allowing you full control. A bit expensive though...IMO. --Slaunger (talk) 20:29, 11 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
Hi Avenue, I wish I were able to repeat slaunger's sentiment, but I have to tell you the truth, and it is that I was disappointed with your oppose reason on my glory image. Best wishes.--Mbz1 (talk) 00:03, 8 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
Yes, in hindsight my oppose rationale there was too brief and curt. In particular, I should have said that I agreed with what I saw as the substance of Carschten's points (that the glory and shadow make up too small a part of the picture, and that the composition does not highlight them enough), but not the dismissive way in which they were phrased. I felt it was a good and interesting photo, just not good enough to be FP.
I believe in not voting (and especially opposing) unless I can review the image thoroughly and explain my reasons clearly, and I have not lived up to that ideal here. You are right to be disappointed. Sorry, Avenue (talk) 01:23, 8 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
