Some more-or-less duplicates

It looks like a lot of the material from the magazine The Coast is more or less duplicating files we already had: same resolution, but probably different compression, and definitely different info pulled from the database. For example:

How do you want to handle this? My only preference is for not losing information. Jmabel ! talk 04:18, 22 December 2023 (UTC)

And apparently not just The Coast:

+ let me add one more strong preference: not having to do a ton of crazy merges by hand. - Jmabel ! talk 04:23, 22 December 2023 (UTC)

Restored from archive 2024-01-02 because there was no response. I believe this needs to be addressed. - Jmabel ! talk 04:56, 3 January 2024 (UTC)

@Dominic: I would really like to hear from you on this before we do anything. I assume you have some interest in what happens here, or if somehow you don't, please say that explicitly. - Jmabel ! talk 22:25, 8 January 2024 (UTC)

Similarly:

This is the first page of a 50-page document in the DPLA upload; offhand it looks like 35 of those pages were in the prior upload and are in Category:Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition - Seattle, June 1-October 16, 1909. Normally we let the older versions win out, but in this case the newer one is more complete. (I haven't checked whether the old one has anything not in the new one, and the numbering doesn't match). - Jmabel ! talk 00:29, 12 January 2024 (UTC)

I'm coming to think that a lot of these may be more complete uploads of things we had earlier. E.g. the files starting at File:Catalogue of educational exhibits in the Washington Educational Building, A.-Y.-P. Exposition, 1909 - DPLA - e7a64c5f2445fd6dd7b28a225e927266 (page 1).jpg seem to be a superset of what's at Category:Catalogue of educational exhibits in the Washington Educational Building, A.-Y.-P. Exposition. It looks like the latter was interested only in pages that had images. The latter were uploaded by the now-banned User:Dcoetzee, so there's no one really with whom to discuss the intent there. - Jmabel ! talk 19:19, 13 January 2024 (UTC)

File:The Abilene Daily Reporter (Abilene, Tex.), Vol. 21, No. 31, Ed. 1 Thursday, April 19, 1917 - DPLA - 93ec7eeb33493578d9f8ee19d5d08a41 (page 8).jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Category:Colfax, Washington brochure, circa 1955

For the files now in Category:Colfax, Washington brochure, circa 1955, how do we get rid of Category:Hand bills which comes from the structured data? It is not accurate, this is not a handbill. - Jmabel ! talk 23:04, 8 January 2024 (UTC)

Just my opinion, but the category shouldn't be obligatory even if it was accurate since it makes so people can't sub-categorize the files. Really, the DLPA bot shouldn't be adding top level, general categories like that to begin with. Especially if they can't be easily changed. --Adamant1 (talk) 19:48, 13 January 2024 (UTC)
@Adamant1: I completely agree with that. Until we do a much better integration of categories and structured data -- an idea that has been pretty firmly rejected by the team working on SDC as anything to work on in the foreseeable future -- structured data should not drive topical categories. Also, really in SDC-driven non-topical categories like Category:Media contributed by the Digital Public Library of America, the filename should be explicitly used as a sort key: DEFAULTSORT on a file should not affect sorting of this non-topical category. - Jmabel ! talk 05:35, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
@Jmabel and Adamant1: Sorry, I didn't get back to some of these comments from before the holidays, and I am just finding time now. I hope this fixed it: [1]. The problem here is not that this topical category was supposed to be added by the subject, but there is a bad template interaction when the Wikidata item has both a "Commons category" property and a sitelink to a Commons category. The latter is duplicative, but causes the page the category to get added to the image itself. I don't believe it makes sense to add categories as sitelinks to the concept entities, since it conflates the Wikimedia category and the thing itself, and there is already a property for it. But it seems fairly common on Wikidata. Dominic (talk) 20:20, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
@Dominic: I believe that the edit you made on Wikidata is simply wrong, and you should revert it. What you removed is the normal way that a Commons category is attached to any item that does not have a separate category page. Without that, we lose the basic "in Wikipedia" interwiki links from the Commons page (and vice versa from the articles in the various Wikipedias to Commons. In fact, if that interwiki link is present in a Wikidata item, there is a bot that will add Commons category (P373) as well, so if you are saying that these should be removed when Commons category (P373) is present, then you are basically saying that this field should never be used to link to Commons categories.
If you doubt me about how this is supposed to work on Wikidata, I suggest you bring the matter to wikidata:Wikidata:Project_chat, where I'm quite certain you will get the same answer I just gave you. I'm willing to wait while you do that rather than just revert you now, but I'm quite confident that this is the wrong solution to the problem I raised. - Jmabel ! talk 21:51, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
@Jmabel: If that is the case, it seems really problematic. I have reverted myself. The goal here is not to impose a topical category based on a subject at all. It was just to have the subject appear in the template and be linked. But linking where the target is a category has the effect of categorizing the page instead. I suppose this change probably fixes it, but the tradeoff is that the subjects can only be displayed as plain text for now, unless someone knows a better way to handle this in Lua. Dominic (talk) 22:04, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
I'm assuming that if this was placing the page in a category, you must have been producing something like rather than :Category:FOO (or, ideally, FOO). (or do I have that wrong?) I don't offhand know exactly how Wikidata Infobox handles the basically equivalent problem, but they appear to handle it successfully. - Jmabel ! talk 22:49, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
