Hi - thank you for contributin to the commons. Please note that the commons do not allow content under the fair use clause, such as logos, screenshots, covers, etc. Have a look at Commons:Licensing, please. -- Duesentrieb 11:18, 24 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Yes, thanks, so I found out, too late. It would have been helpful of the Wikipedia upload page, which exhorts you in huge letters to upload your pics to Wiki Commons instead, to point out that the copyright situation is completely different there and your proposed upload may be completely unsuitable. Well, I'll know next time. Flapdragon 13:33, 24 Apr 2005 (UTC)
You should really tell an admin at the en-wp about this issue - the fact that the commons do not allow fair use images should indeed be mentioned. Apart from that, the copyright situation here is not much different from the en:wp and other wikipedias. In fact, it's pretty much thet same as on the german wp, for instance. -- Duesentrieb 13:46, 24 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Oh, and for non-fair-use images, please always use a license tag and mention the author (if you made the image yourself, say so). Best would be to use Template:Information on the description page. Thanks for contributing! -- Duesentrieb 13:48, 24 Apr 2005 (UTC)
I take it all back -- it does say there that images must not be "fair use". I just didn't notice... Flapdragon 13:53, 24 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Hello, Flapdragon!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.
