Unblock request granted

This blocked user asked to be unblocked, and one or more administrators has reviewed and granted this request.

Request reason: "I understand that I was blocked for uploading unfree files after receiving several warnings, and I sincerely apologize for my actions. Specifically, my last upload, File:Keemokazi 2022.jpg, which I cropped from a YouTube video and licensed under {{YouTube}}, was in violation of Wikimedia Commons policies. I now realize why this was considered an unfree file. Since then, I have thoroughly reviewed the Wikimedia Commons guidelines and policies regarding file uploads and revisited the discussions on my user talk page, particularly the one concerning this file. I promise that I will never upload unfree files again and am committed to strictly following the uploading guidelines to ensure compliance with Wikimedia Commons standards. I believe everyone can improve from mistakes. The problem i kept uploading unfree files was because, i did not read any warnings or the guidelines, however i now have read them. So please unblock me."
This template should be archived normally.

File:Salaamathi.ogg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Unblock discussion

edit

Hello, to show that you understand copyright and licensing could you please re-read Commons:Licensing and answer the following questions (feel free to answer inline) in your own words?

  1. What is a copyright violation?
  2. What was wrong with File:Keemokazi 2022.jpg (the file you linked in your unblock request)?
  3. How do you know what you are uploading is a copyright violation or not?

Matrix(!) {user - talk? - uselesscontributions} 07:23, 1 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

1. A copyright violation occurs when medias ex.images, videos are uploaded without proper permission or do not adhere to copyright laws or when copyrighted material is used without permission from the copyright holder.
2. I doesn't understand why File:Keemokazi 2022.jpg was a copyright violation, because there are many files of YouTube, using the Template:YouTube CC-BY, such as screenshots, videos. Example this and more.
3. First ensure that the work is either originally created by you or a other person. If it is a other's work, then you should ask permission (if on a website etc. you should check their copyright policy).
While uploading others works, you should give a source and an appropriate copyright in accordance to their copyright policy, as i did in many files ex. this file which i uploaded, a work by President's Office and gave Attribution to them using Template:Presidency of Maldives (CC-BY-4.0) in accordance to their copyright policy in their website. So please unblock me. Thank you. MAL MALDIVE (talk) 08:27, 1 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Your answers to the first/last questions are good. However, if you read Commons:YouTube files (the licensing section), it says "most YouTube videos are not eligible for upload to Wikimedia Commons". It then says "YouTube offers the option to license videos under the free license Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 (CC BY) which is compatible with Commons". If you look at your video there is no marker for CC BY in the description. However, if you look at [1] and expand the description then you can see it says "Creative Commons Attribution licence (reuse allowed)" so this can be uploaded on Commons.
Also just a reminder about Commons' licencing rules (copied from COM:L):
  • Republication and distribution must be allowed.
  • Publication of derivative work must be allowed.
  • Commercial use of the work must be allowed.
  • The license must be perpetual (non-expiring) and non-revocable.
If you want to check whether a file is public domain for anything published in the Maldives you can read Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Maldives and Commons:URAA-restored copyrights (a file must be public domain in its source country and the US to be uploaded to Commons as public domain). @Bedivere: thoughts on unblock? —Matrix(!) {user - talk? - uselesscontributions} 05:06, 2 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Ah! now get it. MAL MALDIVE (talk) 05:36, 2 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Matrix I trust your judgment in this case. Bedivere (talk) 23:17, 2 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
You're unblocked now, just follow the above and don't upload copyright violations. Welcome back! —Matrix(!) {user - talk? - uselesscontributions} 03:28, 3 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
I will make sure that. MAL MALDIVE (talk) 05:14, 3 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
