Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Hallo Roland! Danke für die Kategorisierung der Medien zur de:Gesellschaft Schweiz-Russland. Da habe ich wieder mal was dazu gelernt! Hallo maiakinfo. Ist mir eine Freude gewesen :-) In der DE-WP bin ich nur noch minimal "aktiv" (= stellenweise bebildern und minimalste Pflege eigenerstellter Artikel), von Zeit zu Zeit werden Bilder aus der commons "Hauptkategorie" Category:Switzerland kategorisiert, sodass ich in dieser Hinsicht wohl keine brauchbare Hilfe sein werde ;-) Die Wiki de:Gesellschaft Schweiz-Russland finde ich ungeachtet dessen interessant zum Lesen (bin durch Deine commons-upload aufmerksam geworden), zudem ein m.E. vernachlässigtes Kapitel unserer Geschichte. ...hab ich gerade geleert. Bitte beachte, dass das Kategoriensystem auf Commons nicht identisch ist mit dem selbigen in der Wikipedia. Am besten such dir vor dem Hochladen des Bildes die am logischsten erscheinende Kategorie aus der Oberkategorie zu Russland aus, die weil sie nach Themengebieten aufgeteilt ist, relativ leicht zu durchschauen ist. gruss --S^[1] 16:20, 22 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Ich bin nicht sicher, ob ich hier am richtigen Ort reagiere. Wenn nicht, bitte ich um eine Rückmeldung. Das Buchcover gestaltete Richard Paul Lohse für die Gesellschaft Schweiz-Russland (als Rechtsnachfolgerin der Gesellschaft Schweiz-Sowjetunion), deren Mitglied Richard Paul Lohse war und dessen Co-Präsident ich bin. Wenn die WP eine schriftliche Bewilligung von der GSR benötigt, ist dies natürlich kein Problem.
