Hello PHGCOM! Welcome to Commons! Thank you for uploading the image Mauryan ringstones. It would be nice to have more images from the British Museum, especially since it is allowed to take photos, and they have so many important things on display. I added the Category:British Museum to the image. Now you can find other objects from the museum by simply clicking on the link on the bottom. It helps navigating and retrieving images if they are included in Categories or gallery pages.

Old work in the Public Domain

Greetings !

Please be cautious with old work; most countries have laws which state that work falls into the public domain after the death of the author (not after the publication of the work). The fact that the author is not known does not automatically make the work an "anonymous" in the sense of the law.

Furthermore, some countries, like France, have in fact a time longer than 70 years (because the years of World Wars are counted double to compensate for the war; even more can be attributed for authors who died for France).

As a rule of the thumb, you might consider that a work whose author is unknown is very probably public domain 200 years after its publication; 100 years is insufficient by far.

I tagged Image:Dupuy de Lome1916.jpg and Image:DupuyDeLomeCruiser(ld1888).jpg accordingly; unless you can find the author of these works (and their date of death makes their works public domain), I am afraid that you will be over-optimistic there.

Stop uploading Creative Commons images. We need more PUBLIC DOMAIN images, not this BS CC license. People are going to scrape content from Wiki, so just let them do it without the unnecessary BS of the CC lincense.

A quick question: I assume that "the samurai Suenaga" is on the right in this picture? The caption describes it as "The samurai Suenaga facing Mongol arrows and bombs", but it appears that the bomb is going from right to left... i.e. he is not "facing" it.

Hi PHG, I noticed you have uploaded several 14th century images from manuscripts by Rashid al-Din. Thanks for your contributions. May I ask if you are scanning these from the originals, or from reproductions of the same? Hi Giggy, nice block :) Many of these drawings are actually drawn from multiple sources, so from what I gather I suppose they are not affected by Copyright (could you confirm?). I guess I just need to state the various sources used, but that going to take about 2-3 weeks before I get done. Could you kindly unblock me in the meantime? Regards. PHGCOM, I'll save you 2-3 weeks of work. To the best of my knowledge, all of the sketches in this group would be valid copyright/fair use uploads at en:Wikipedia; you could just take an hour and transfer them there with license corrections. If you refuse to do so I will nominate the group for deletion on the following grounds:

• Every single example I was able to confirm completely was a direct imitation of a copyrighted photograph, with no substantial creative contribution that would justify your claim to creative rights.
• You have about 20 prior notices, warnings, and complaints about copyright issues with image uploads at this page, spanning more than 2 years.
• There is currently an open arbitration request at en:Wikipedia where multiple editors question the propriety of your use of sources.

I do appreciate the effort you've taken to create these sketches and upload them. Please appreciate also that questionable uploads undermine this project's standing with the public at large. That can have a serious impact when other Wikimedians seek the cooperation of outside organizations. Last month when a featured picture at Wikipedia nearly got delisted, I contacted a Holocaust museum and they uploaded a higher resolution version of that important image. The other day I wrote to two different government agencies to confirm the status of an image that I'm already 90% confident is public domain. If this project gets a reputation among museums and libraries as the sort of site that plays fast and loose with copyright, then it's going to become harder to get assistance from those people. I have already spent hours researching the legitimacy of your uploads. This was not pleasant work, and your replies have been slow when they came at all. Concerns about MET images

PHG, I am concerned by some of the images you have recently been uploading, specifically:

They are beautiful images and I wish that we could use them, but I understand that you took them yourself at the MET, which I assume to mean New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art (if you mean some other museum, please let me know). You see, I checked the MET's photography policy, and though they allow pictures, those photos are only for "private, noncommercial use".[1] As such, they most definitely cannot be uploaded to the Commons, since all images here are public, and potentially can be used for commercial use.

If you do have other formal permission from the MET, it would be best to post it. If not, I recommend that you tag all such MET images for deletion. A few may also be allowable at EN as "fair use". I agree with you that it is very sad. Many of your images are exceptionally beautiful, and I would hate to lose access to them. But, we have to stick with what is allowable, and unless the MET has given permission somewhere that I don't know about, the pics just cannot be used here.
