Flag of Norway edit

Hi Zorrolll. Your minimal flag of Norway is a clever idea. Unfortunately, it doesn't really work well with MediaWiki. For example:

Also, it doesn't scale up if you write without specifying a size explicitly. For that reason, I've uploaded Image:Flag of Norway.svg, and marked your minimal version as redundant. dbenbenn | talk 15:41, 26 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Does the svg file have the correct aspects, i.e. horizontal 6+1+2+1+12 and vertical 6+1+2+1+6?
Does it have the colours  bright red  (#EF2B2D) and  dark blue  (#002868)? --Eddi 18:14, 26 October 2005 (UTC)Reply
Yes, and yes. Try downloading the SVG and opening it in a text editor; you'll see it's quite easy to understand. dbenbenn | talk 18:47, 26 October 2005 (UTC)Reply
I have looked inside the files of the small PNG, the large SVG, and the largest available PNG, and apparently they all use the same colours. Now, have a look below – are they really the same? How can this be? Which presentation is closest to that prescribed by Norwegian regulations? --Eddi 21:47, 26 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Small PNG enlarged to 150

Large SVG reduced to 150
File:Norway flag huge.png
Huge PNG reduced to 150
Yes, they all use the same colors. Furthermore, note that with the minimal version, the scaling is done by the web browser, and browsers usually scale images badly. For example, compare    . At least in Firefox, the minimal flag looks fairly bad at 31px, whereas with SVG, MediaWiki does the scaling, so it looks good at all sizes. dbenbenn | talk 22:51, 26 October 2005 (UTC)Reply
I know, the scaling is bad with the minimal version, especially below 4-5 times magnification. However, although both images use the same colours, the colours don't look the same. The colours of the minimal version look better, i.e. sharper. It seems like good scaling gives bad colours and vice versa – can we have both? --Eddi 23:18, 26 October 2005 (UTC)Reply
When web browsers scale images, they don't use anti-aliasing. That means that if you look closely, the colors are sharper, but the image is not as accurate. For example, in a small version of the flag of Norway, a given pixel might need to be blue in the top half and white in the bottom half—the only solution is to make the color of the pixel halfway between blue and white. It's true that antialiasing looks kind of bad if you magnify the pixels (or if you put your eye really close to the screen) but it looks fine under any normal use. I'm opposed to having special small versions of images; they're less accurate, and anyway, it's bad for your eyes to have them that close to the monitor. dbenbenn | talk 00:56, 27 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

About a week ago I inserted the minimal PNG in a lot of templates at en:, no:, and nn:, but when the new SVG was available I reversed the procedure. It took some time for the PNG templates to take effect, and it took even longer for the effect to wear off, but now the minimal PNG is not linked from any articles (just some user talk) at commons, en:, no:, or nn:. (There seems to be a few links at no: but that's an illusion.) Is the little PNG ready to be retired? --Eddi 00:46, 2 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

Probably, we can mark the png as redundant again. --ZorroIII 20:36, 4 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

Hi Zorrolll, I noticed that you have uploaded Image:Skilt146 01.png with a transparent background. Could you upload the sign 146.4 (Ku) in the same way? (http://www.vegvesen.no/vegskilt/fareskilt/bmp/146_4.bmp) -84.248.17.223 17:04, 6 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hello!

Thank you for providing images to the Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to the Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on the Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thank you. /Lokal_Profil 18:11, 31 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hello, ZorroIII!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.
