Internal database error edit

Tried three times to upload this book using the wizard, "The_Extermination_of_the_American_Bison.djvu" but failed each time with the following error message: <api-error-internal_api_error_MWException>. Will now try to do it the old way.

First tried the "IA transfer bot" as well, but it failed to find the book, so there must be several glitches somewhere. — Ineuw talk 06:40, 30 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Advising authorized non-authors edit

I emailed an organization requesting the contribution of a few pictures to use as illustrations. They just responded favorably (yay!). Now I'm trying to advise them on how to upload. Unfortunately, I'm actually pretty clueless about how Commons works.

The people I'm talking to are in the marketing department, authorized to handle the organization's images but not themselves the authors. How should I tell them to navigate the "release rights" step of the Upload Wizard? FourViolas (talk) 10:33, 1 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Fast answer appreciated if anyone can help. Should I tell them to use {{OTRS Pending}} in the upload form and email one of the templates to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org? Also, I see an account is necessary to upload. If I want to save them the trouble of registering, is it acceptable for them to email me the photo (to upload for them, OTRS-pending) and email OTRS the permission? changing image on an actors wiki page edit

Hello, so if I want to change an image on an actors wikipedia page and the new image is from said actors personal IG account where he himself has said he'd prefer this image on the wikipage. If say it is a selfie or just a general image of himself he uploaded, which common license thingy is the right one to click before uploading?

Also I found another image, where the source seems to be contactmusic, are images from them allowed on here, if so, which licence thing do they fall under?

Thanks for any reply. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Brumme85 (talk • contribs) 20:45, 1 July 2015‎ (UTC)[reply]

The answer to both questions is that if the copyright holder hasn't explicitly released their work under a free license, it isn't covered by a free license. Wikimedia Commons only hosts content that is free for anyone to use, modify and redistribute for any purpose, including commercial purposes. We do not hosts content that is only intended for Wikipedia. Content on contactmusic.com (like the content on most sites) is completely non-free, as stated copyright notice at the bottom of every page and in their terms and conditions, and must not be uploaded to Commons. Uploading a new version with minor differences edit

I wanted to upload a new version of an image (a diagram), in which I fixed a couple of errors. When I finished uploading, I found out that the current version displayed on the file page is identical to the old version, the version that has the errors. Apparently the system thought my new image is identical to another image in the system - the old version - since there are indeed only minute differences between the two, and "uploaded" the old image as my new version. How can I get the system to upload the new version exactly as it is on my computer? — Preceding unsigned comment added by TroyGab (talk • contribs) 10:42, 2 July 2015‎ (UTC)[reply]

@TroyGab: Sometimes it takes a while for the preview image to be updated. However, since the new version shows up for me, it is likely that the old version is still in your browser's cache. In that case:

Unsure which license to use edit

Hi.

I'd like to upload the logo in this page:

http://www.pazadik.org/Zanyary.aspx?Jimare=2

But under which license do I have the right to publish their work? Dewrano (talk) 20:08, 3 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Only the copyright holder gets to choose a license. That's the only license you have a right to use. Unless they have chosen a free license, you may not upload the logo to Wikimedia Commons. --rimshottalk 22:02, 3 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Would I need to contact them? How would they obtain a license? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dewrano (talk • contribs) 22:45, 3 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Unless the organization has published the logo with an explicit statement of a free licence, to which you can provide a link or citation, then yes, someone would have to request that they issue a release. Owners of intellectual property have the (sole) ability to license their work as they choose; it’s we that need to obtain it from them. (If they’re agreeable, they may even be able to provide a better-quality version of the logo artwork.) If the organization does not own the design, then permission would have to come from the graphic artist who made it. Please see COM:OTRS for detailed instructions on obtaining permission from copyright holders, where you will also find a sample letter of consent.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 00:38, 4 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The Waterloo Elm edit

Link at left is to uncropped version.
Inserted above OP.—Odysseus1479 (talk)

During the Battle of Waterloo the Waterloo Elm was located just south west of the intersection of the sunken land and the Genappe–Brussles main road. It was Wellington's command post for much of the battle. The tree was killed by souvenir hunters after the battle. It was felled in 1818 and made into furniture, which included a chair presented to George IV that remains in the British Royal Collection.

There is a Pencil and scraper painting in the Royal Collection of the Waterloo Elm by Anna Children (1799-1871). Images of which are probably under copyright in the UK (Royal Collection Trust/© Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II 2015) -- they say so and I am no expert on the issue.

To the best of my knowledge, a few years ago it was accepted by the Wipiedia foundation that a US citizen could upload images of the British National Portrait Gallery providing the images were of portraits where the copyright has expired.

In this case the artist drew the picture in about 1818 and she has been dead since 1871, so the picture is not under copyright. There are several copied of the picture available online.

Can someone copy the image onto Wikimedia Commons?

  1. Go to the right website. This is not Wikipedia. This is Wikimedia Commons, a repository of free media (images, audio, video and so on). We do not host articles.
  2. Read their guideline on conflicts of interest and realise that this probably wasn't a good idea in the first place.

Delete image edit

How do I request that an image that I added be deleted? Rationalobserver (talk) 00:31, 7 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

If you uploaded it in the last week, you can request a speedy ‘uploader’s remorse’ deletion by tagging the file with {{SD|7}}. If it’s any older than that, though, you should go through the regular process; it’s not standard practice to do “courtesy deletions” after the seven-day grace period has expired, although admins may not require any further rationale to act on (unopposed) requests to delete an unused file. If it’s being used on another project, though, you will definitely need a good reason aside from your own preference.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 02:11, 7 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Laurie, and thanks for contributing your photo! I assume you want to change which photo is used on en:Nanaimo Airport. To do that, just edit the page and replace the name of the old photo (CYCD.JPG) with the name of yours (Nanaimo Airport 2015.jpg) on the third line from the top. There is no need to delete File:CYCD.JPG from Commons, and you shouldn't overwrite it either. We want to have many alternative illustrations here on Commons. Fair use material need OTRS-permission in Commons --Motopark (talk) 11:13, 14 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
That's not correct. The fair use exception depends on the context in which the content is used and therefore does not apply to general-purpose media repositories such as Commons, so Commons cannot host non-free fair use content. (Where it does apply, it is permitted by law, and therefore doesn't require the copyright holder's permission.) Commons:OTRS can only accept permissions that cover publication under a free license. Obtaining a free license for this type of content is unlikely.
Fair use content for use on the Portuguese Wikipedia must be locally uploaded there (not to Commons), provided that it meets the requirements listed in pt:Wikipédia:Conteúdo restrito. LX (talk, contribs) 11:29, 14 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

how to overwrite an existing file? edit

I have made a minor edit to an image, correcting an obvious mistake (a callout had been moved by a previous contributor, but the object it pointed to was missing). This image has been changed many times by numerous contributors.

I have read the discussions about when and when not to overwrite a file. It makes no sense to keep the previous graphic (used in several Wikipedia articles) when it contains an obvious and easily-corrected mistake, but I cannot figure out how to overwrite the existing one. The only option I have is to rename the file and create a new variant image.

Here is the file; the callout for Pluto's moon Hydra is there, but the image for Hydra is missing. The callout and image are correct on earlier versions of this graphic.

As in Microsoft Excel? As mentioned on Commons:File types, Commons only hosts files using free formats, and Microsoft Excel uses a non-free, non-standard, proprietary legacy file format. Furthermore, Wikimedia Commons is a media repository. We primarily host media files: images, video and audio. The kind of tabular data found in spreadsheets is typically best represented directly using wiki markup directly on the project where you want to include the data. Correct license for uploading an image edit

I have been having issues with uploading images to my wikicommons. The image that I have been trying to upload was a picture of a Chinese singer, taken by a fan during a public event. I already have the permission from this author to use this picture on wiki. However, I had a really hard time finding the correct license for this. Each time when I tried to upload an image, it was deleted from the wikicommons even if I do have the permissions from the authors. Could you please tell me which license should I use? I looked at all of the license and copyright pages and have tried everything I could, but my image still got deleted.

The picture was taken in China, and I took the picture from the author's lofter account. Here is the link of the image: http://sweetcub.lofter.com/post/4410cf_7203825 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Yids Cong (talk • contribs) 06:25, 23 July 2015‎ (UTC)[reply]

Hello Dthomsen8, look here. Regards --Jean11 (talk) 06:43, 25 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
id:File:KGPAA Mangkunegara IX.jpg is marked as non-free fair use content. It should not be uploaded to Commons, because fair use content cannot be hosted here. English Wikipedia allows non-free fair use content to be locally uploaded, but no Wikimedia project is allowed to host non-free fair use content if a free alternative could reasonably be created. The example used is "almost all portraits of living notable individuals".
So it should probably be deleted from the Bahasa Indonesia Wikipedia, it probably shouldn't be uploaded to English Wikipedia, and it definitely shouldn't be uploaded here on Commons. LX (talk, contribs) 07:17, 25 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

please help - uploading logos with copyright edit

Help! I'm trying to upload a company logo to go with an already-existing article about that company.

The logo needs to be copyrighted, similar to this company logo: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Direct_Ferries_Logo.jpg

I cannot find any helpful info on how to do this! I can't believe how complicated this is!!!

Any help gratefully appreciated, many thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ‎GeeCee75 (talk • contribs)

That Direct Ferries logo is on the English Wikipedia, not this site, and wouldn‘t be allowed here under those terms. Unless the one you want to upload is too simple to copyright (the example might actually pass on that basis under US rules anyway), we can’t host it here either. You can most likely post it there instead, because they accept non-free images under certain conditions. Note that it must include a fair use rationale like the above example, and that it will get deleted if not used in the specified article.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 17:31, 28 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

How can I upload a jpeg photo of myself for inclusion in my page. edit

Many years ago a photo of someone who was not me was included in my wikipedia page. That was copied numerous times in many places. Consequently, if you look for images of maurice karnaugh online, you will find a melange of images, most of which are not me. I would like to correct this situation.

Please help, Maurice Karnaugh — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.45.41.207 (talk • contribs) 19:54, 28 July 2015‎ (UTC)[reply]

Hi Maurice! Firstly, you will need a photo which the person who created the photo is willing to release under a free license. (That's a copyright license that allows anyone to use, modify and redistribute the photo for any purpose. Non-copyright restrictions like personality rights will still prevent some uses of your likeness.) Secondly, the person who created the photo will need to register an account. (It takes less than a minute and doesn't require disclosure of any personal information – even providing an e-mail address is optional. If the photo is taken by someone other than yourself, it's easiest if they do the uploading so you don't have to deal with mailing in permission statements.) The third step is to go to Special:UploadWizard and follow the instructions there. Finally, for information on how to include it in an (English) Wikipedia article, see en:Wikipedia:Picture tutorial. Flickr edit

Is this CC BY-NC-SA 2.0 and CC BY-NC-ND 2.0 are the right licenses to upload in the commons?--Exploringlife (talk) 15:11, 29 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

No. Commons only hosts free content. Content published under a license that prohibits commercial use and/or modifications is not free. LX (talk, contribs) 21:41, 29 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Upload a new version of this file edit

Hi ! I could not upload a new version of File:Small_lake_in_Aletsch_Glacier_in_june_2015._Close_view.jpg so I had to upload File:Aletsch_Glacier_Lake_2015_and_Eggishorn.jpg with a higher definition on a new page instead of uploading this new version in the File history. What can I do to move this file to the page of the first file ? Thank you--Cquoi 20:09, 29 July 2015 (UTC)— Preceding unsigned comment added by Cquoi (talk • contribs)

Hi Cquoi, what did you do to upload a new version/ why did it fail? -- Rillke(q?) 23:07, 29 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Rillke, I tried several times to click on "Upload a new version of this file" but it would not work maybe because I have a very slow connexion with public wifi where I am for the moment ! Thanks a lot for having moved my file. Regards. --Cquoi (talk, contribs)Cquoi 07:31, 30 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Trouble with displaying colors after upload edit

Hi guys. Doesn't really know whether it's the right place for my question...

I have uploaded my own picture File:Kit body chornomorets2015-16 home.png on the wikimedia commons. As one can see the picture has a blue light color. After the upload this color is properly displayed by wikipedia pages.

When I uploaded my own picture File:Kit_left_arm_chornomorets2015-16.png which uses the same colors as the one before, the wikipedia pages show another blue based color as one can see when we open the picture, for instanse, under the PC Windows Paint (Picture Editor).

Does anybody have a hint what is the problem about colors in the second picture? Thanks in advance and kind regards. 188.96.57.244 21:26, 30 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
